Call for Submissions: 2018 Katharine Kyes Leab & Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition

Submissions for the 2017 Katharine Kyes Leab & Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Awards are being accepted until Friday, October 15, 2017. The awards are given annually in recognition of excellence in the publication of catalogs and brochures that accompany exhibitions of library and archival materials, as well as for digital exhibitions of such materials. The prizes are administered and awarded by the ALA/ACRL/RBMS Exhibition Awards Committee.

Submissions of printed materials (4 copies of each catalog or brochure) must be postmarked by October 15th. For digital exhibitions, only the filled in form is needed which asks for basic information about the exhibition and the names of its creators; this form can be completed in a few minutes. After judging is completed and the awards announced, the printed materials are sent to The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, The Harry Ransom Humanities Center at UT Austin, and the Grolier Club in New York City. This constitutes a triplicate archive of the self-selected best work in the field. I’ve previously posted announcements about awards, and slowly I’ve collected information. Explore my new page about Awards, and I encourage authors to apply. Promote your scholarship!

I took liberties with the list; they are not all archival scholarship-specific. However, I did this purposely to create awareness of not just award opportunities, but publishing opportunities. The more we can publish outside our profession (even in library journals), the better.

I compiled the list primarily by looking at SAA’s list of archival and allied organizations, plus a few others I came across. If you know of others, please comment below. I’ll continue to post announcements when I’m aware of them.

Mander Jones Awards – Publications, Australian Society of Archivists

An Award for Professional Writing

In 1996 the Society introduced this award for publications in the field of archives and recordkeeping. This award honours Phyllis Mander Jones who, amongst other contributions to the profession, authored Manuscripts in the British Isles relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, in 1972. Miss Mander Jones was also the first Corresponding Secretary of the Archives Section of the Library Association of Australia (the section eventually handed over its records and activities to the Australian Society of Archivists, at the foundation of the Society in 1975) and she co-edited the first issue of the Society’s journal Archives and Manuscripts.

Conditions of Entry

  • Any person or institution may nominate
  • A publication is defined as printed or electronic material intended for distribution
  • Entries must have been published in the previous calendar year
  • A copy of the work or instructions on accessing the work must be submitted with the nomination form along with a short statement in support of the nomination.
  • Where feasible, it is recommended that nominators secure the consent of the nominee/s and provide their contact details.

Call for Nominations: Theodore Calvin Pease Award for Outstanding Student Research Paper

The competition now is open for the 2017 SAA Theodore Calvin Pease Award for outstanding student research paper.  Additional information is below.

Theodore Calvin Pease Award

Purpose and Criteria for Selection:
Created in 1987 and modified in 2007 and 2012, this award recognizes superior writing achievements by students of archival studies. Entries are judged on innovation, scholarship, pertinence, and clarity of writing. Papers examining major trends and issues in the archives profession are preferred.

Eligibility:
Eligible entries are written by students enrolled in archival studies classes at either the master’s or doctoral level. A faculty member or instructor associated with the archival studies program must submit the entry to verify that the student paper was written within the context of an archival studies program and completed during the preceding calendar year. A faculty member or instructor in an archival studies program may submit one entry per award cycle. There is no cap on the number of papers than can be submitted by a school or program, provided no individual faculty member submits more than one paper.

Entries should be unpublished manuscripts of 5,000-8,000 words, must include an abstract, and should conform to the stylistic guidelines described in the editorial policy<http://www2.archivists.org/american-archivist/editorialpolicy>; of The American Archivist. Submit only the title with the paper. The name of the author, the program, or the faculty member or instructor must not appear on the manuscript.

Sponsor and Funding:

The Society of American Archivists Foundation, in honor of Theodore Calvin Pease, the first editor of The American Archivist.

Prize:
A certificate and cash prize of $100. The winning manuscript, after going through the editorial process with the editor of The American Archivist, will be published in The American Archivist.

First Awarded: 1988

Selection Committee:
Papers will be judged in a blind review by the Pease Subcommittee of the SAA Awards Committee.  The subcommittee consists of the current editor of The American Archivist, the vice chair of the Committee on Education, and a member of the Society of American Archivists with experience in archival research and literature appointed annually by the president-elect to serve a one-year term. The current editor of The American Archivist serves as the chair of the subcommittee and shall present the award. The current editor ofThe American Archivist also edits the manuscript and leads the student through the editorial process in preparation for publication.

NEH and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Announce Fellowships for Digital Publication

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is proud to join the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in announcing the recipients of the first round of NEH-Mellon Fellowships for Digital Publication. The new special opportunity within NEH’s fellowship program is intended to stimulate the emerging field of digital publication.

If you have, please consider nominating it for the Society of American Archivists Waldo Gifford Leland Award. Nomination forms, a list of previous winners, and more information are at http://www2.archivists.org/governance/handbook/section12-leland. The deadline for nominations is February 28, 2017.

The annual Leland Award – a cash prize and certificate – recognizes “writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the field of archival history, theory, and practice.” (Please note that periodicals are not eligible.)

Established in 1959, this award honors American archival pioneer Waldo Gifford Leland (1879-1966), president of the Society of American Archivists in the 1940s and one of the driving forces behind the founding of the National Archives.
